Cloud Computing

What is cloud computing?

While the definition of ‘cloud’ computing continues to evolve, there are some basic characteristics which indicate that a computing practice is conducted ‘in the cloud’:

  • The service or application is accessed over the internet
  • You don’t need to own or manage any servers to access it
  • The ability to scale applications and services to meet the demand of the business easily and immediately.
  • You pay the cloud service provider a rental fee rather than a one-off purchase price

What are the benefits of moving to the cloud?

Cloud computing has many advantages over running applications on your own servers:

  • Cost efficient, due to sharing the provider’s resources with other customers,
  • No capital expenditure
  • Good for mobile and remote workers, as your employees just need a public internet connection to access the files and applications they need
  • Good for business continuity and disaster recovery, as it isn’t affected by incidents at your premises and workers can continue working from home
  • More reliable, as the provider can run servers across multiple sites
  • Easy scalability, so that you don’t hit bottlenecks in growth
  • Enterprise-class server security for any size of customer
  • Enterprise-class security options for users, such as 2-factor authentication
